Flare up in the Caluula System

. . .Rebel advances in the Gbu syste. . .

Alliance Free News interrupts this Imperial propaganda to bring you important news.

Gladiator Star Destroyers moving in for the attack
We have reports of a conflict between Commander Lyraeus in the Caluula system. During a blockade run to bring much needed supplies from interested parties to the Mon Calamari system, Commander Lyraeus encountered several Imperial Gladiator Star Destroyers that were beleaguering the trading station in the area.

We have reports that Commander Lyraeus was able to fend off the Imperials attacks through the use of his flagship Blue Majesty and her sister ship Scars of Freedom. These two modified Assault Frigate mkii B's were backed up by two squadrons of A-Wings, and four squadrons of Y-Wings.

There was fierce battles around the station that was surrounded by asteroids and debris fields. Riuka Nadori led Lightning Squadron, made up of A-Wings, to assist the host of Y-Wings in damaging the Imperial flagship as well as injuring the Gladiator known as the Demolisher. Scars of Freedom suffered some damage causing it to leave the battle when the Imperial forces retreated.

Due to the heroic efforts of the this task force, the Imperial forces in the area were forced to retreat with severe hull damage and blown shield projectors, This is a tremendous victory for the Alliance as it takes these dangerous Imperial forces off the front lines. This loss of battle ready ships for the Imperial forces will erode their control of the sector.

We will bring more information on this as we get more news from the front.

Mon Calamari's desires freedom

. . . the Mon Calamari government I. . .

Alliance Free News interrupts this Imperial propaganda to bring you important news.

The Mon Calamari of the Mon Cal system are rising up to declare the desire for independence from the oppression known as the Galactic Empire!

We from AFN rejoice with their decision to remove the chains of slavery from their people.

With this new turn of events, it looks like the Rebel Alliance will assist and support the Mon Calamari in their quest for freedom.

The Mon Calamari are a strong people who have created magnificent works of art in all that they create. From their homes under the waves on Mon Cal to their star ships. They create uniques works of art that are celebrated throughout the known worlds.

The Imperial Navy has stated that the Mon Calamari are only worthy of destruction which shows their natures as destroyers and as the villans they are.

The Imperial Navy states that the ships created by the Mon Calamari people are no threat to them, they say the same about the Alliance and yet they are unable to crush our aspirations to rid the universe of their tyranny!

We will bring more information on this as we get more news from the front.

This is Alliance Free News the voice of the Rebellion signing off.

. . .by the Empire is not ultimately enough. . .

We learned that wave 2 is right around the corner! To add to that we have confirmation on an exciting event that will be occuring! The Massing at Sullust event will have a single expansion of each individual expansion that will be coming out in wave 2!

This event will be held in select stores around the world (as far as we know) and it will consist of two stages.

Stage 1 will be a standard Swiss tournament rounds at 300 points. There will be a limit of 16 people per kit which is to make sure that everyone attending gets something! The top 2 from the Swiss rounds will move on to stage 2.

Stage 2 will consist of each player choosing a different faction (One Imperial, one Rebel) and building a list that uses the two ships from that faction as well as at least one of the squadrons from the squadron pack that is in wave 2.

The lists created will be at 400 points and the two players will battle it out, the winner getting to choose the first of the 5 expansions that they will walk away home with!

Players 2, 3, and 4, then get to pick in their respective orders and the Tournament Organizer will get the remaining expansion.

Conflagration in the Nelvaan syetem

. . .  plete and strategically unsuited for the New Or. . .

Alliance Free News interrupts this Imperial propaganda with news of combat in the Nelvaan system.

Recently there was a conflict between two Imperial Victory Star Destroyers and their associated squadrons in the process of looting a trading station in the Nelvaan trade lanes.

Two Assault Frigates and a Nebulon-B Escort Frigate responded to this outrageous act against the people of the Nelvaan system. The Assault Frigate "Orca's Pride" and the "Scars of Freedom" joined the Escort Frigate "Redemption" in defending the Nelvaan systems rights to free trade. They were escorted by only two X-Wing squadrons who were instructed to prevent the Imperial squadrons from having free runs at the Frigates.

During the battle, Assault shuttles were able to dock and loot much of the supplies on the station. Even with turbolaser and ion cannon fire crippling the "Orca's Pride" and nearly destroying her, the three ships were able to overwhelm the defenses and destroy the flagship of this Imperial incursion.

In the end, all three Frigates came out of the battle intact while most of the Imperial squadrons and the second Victory Star Destroyer were able to escape after being unable to cope with the determination and spirit of the Alliance!

So this game was honestly a luck fest for me. Early on I could not get shots to save my life and I was just spirling out of control with trying to take out the Imperial Flagship. Those of you who have seen my space whale paint job know "Orca's Pride" which was my flagship for this match.

Alright here is how the game went.

Turn 1 we both ambled forward. I was somewhat smart in my deployment angeling in on the outpost but later realised that it was a bad idea. It lead me to come straight on into the front arcs of the VSD's. No combat at this stage.

Turn 2 we continued forward but I while I thought I was smart (which this next part disprroves XP ) I activated my Redemption first and ran into my own flagship! Talk about silliness (I am toning it down. . . Trust me the swear words wish to be let forth. . . ) Well that left the Redemtion parked and because it was speed 1 it later in the game got out distanced and was unable to use its effect much. . . Silly me. . .

Turn 3 is where the main combat came into play. I was able to repair the damage card on the Redemption easily enough and "Orca's Pride" just ambled on and repaired the damage. This turn I overlapped a debris with "Orca's Pride" and took the 2 damage on my port shield (which was never attacked all game except once I think). The Imperial Flagship's front arc was out of range and he was within medium range and decided to slow down to speed 0! Now to be fair he did this because "Scars of Freedom" was going to get a double arc if he moved and instead stayed in its front arc.

"Orca's Pride" lost all front shields in that squadron phase due to being in close range of them (he had rhymer but that ust came into play), OH that was where the last port shield whent! I redirected it from the front arc to it.

Turn 4 came around and I start to worry that I am going to lose just from victory tokens. "Orca's Pride" begins the assault on the starboard shields of the speed 0 flagship dealing 4 damage and a critical effect!  The crit made it so that he could not ready defense tokens which was going to be useful. "Orca's Pride" then came in behind the Imperial flagship and was broadsided by both the rear and side arcs. Though no much damage was dealt. The imperial squadrons were able to strip the side and rear shields from her as well. "Scars of Freedom" was able to take down the front arc of the flagship before moving to the starboard side of it. The Redemtion is finally picking up speed and just might get some shots in!

Turn 5 comes and after being screened by "Scars of Freedom", "Orca's Pride" was able to escape the near death situiation and and dealt some damage to the Imperial flagship and by the end of the turn it was up stripped of almost all of its shields. And another damage was dealt.

Down to the final turn! I am down to 0 points and he is up to 100! I am worried out of my mind but there is hope! Redemption is in the combat. After it delived some damage last turn it was able to deliver to finishing blow to the flagship thanks to the "Scars of Freedom" dealing 5 damage. The Flagship had no brace thanks to last tast turns combat. . . 126 points in my favor! Next the "Scars of Freedom" was able to get to the station and score my only victory token!

Due to the skin of my teeth I was able to pull this win out but I will admit I was thinking I would lose this 100-0. . .

Thoughts?

Rebel Fleets: Countering the Gladiator Star Destroyer

Today AFN is taking a look at fleet staragies to combat enemy commander's use of the Gladiator Star Destroyer.  As always, Yavin will be conducting this interview.

Today we bring back Commander A and Commander B but since we are asking them for more interviews and to protect their idenity they will be known as Commander Hoth and Commander Endor.

Yavin: Good morning commanders. Todays topic is about a counter to the Gladiators deployment and actions in combat. Lets start off with Commander Hoth

Commander Hoth: Hmmm the Gladiator again. As a corvette commander I have heard of Admirals using smaller ships like the corvettes as bait.

Commander Endor: [shudders] Talk about a think wall between you and space.

Yavin: What do you mean by that Commander Endor?

Commander Endor: A corvette relies on its speed to keep it from suffering an excessive amount of damage. When you use something as bait, it has to be something that will possibly be sacrificed.

Commander Hoth: [nods sagely] Endor has a point there. I have done it before and limped away by the the grace of the Force. Any more damage and I would have called for the crew to abandon ship, what was left of them. . .

Commander Endor: [pats Hoth on the back] It is war and there will always be losses.

Yavin: So using a smaller ship as bait could likely lead to the sacrifice of that ship?

Commander Endor: Against the Demolisher, almost always. With the sadistic gunners on the Demolisher and the vast array of missile launchers, she can swing in for the kill the same turn that you set the bait on the hook.

Commander Hoth: She does not always get to enjoy her victory over the Corvette. Many commanders will use Nebulon-B's or Assault Frigates to punish the Demolisher.

Yavin: What about other Gladiators?

Commander Hoth: Well I usually see the Demolisher more ofthen than naught but there have been a few times when another Gladiator was used. The Corvette can fair better then. If your fleet commander is good, he will have you slow down as if you are trying to extend the combat and right before the Gladiator strikes he will have you jump to max speed to escape destruction.

Commander Endor: It can be tricky to do properly, I have seen some commanders stick to middle or near max speeds and then jump the ship they think is the main target forward. This will usually lead to the Gladiator over shooting thir mark, just be careful it does it out you in their sights earlier than you want, or make sure you have the initiative and escape first.

Yavin: Whew, that sounds dangerous, what about Nebulon-B Commander's. How can they counter the threat?

Commander Hoth: This is a tricky one. . .

Commander Endor: You bet your bonnet it is. The Nebulon-B has a few options. It can joust at long range but it has to be going slow for that. Just above a read stop.

Yavin: Why would they want to do that? It sounds counter intuitive to our normal tactics.

Commander Hoth: I see where Endor is going with this. While it sounds reversed, going slower allows you to react and you those long range Turbolasers a bit longer.

Commander Endor: Yup, it will also let you jinx the engagement by letting you time a well done command to jump your speed up. You can save up some energy early on and then go from slow to fast in a single reaction.

Yavin: OK, now we know that Space Whale. . .  [faces reddens], I mean the Assault Frigate can take some punishment from a Gladiator, but what improvements would you suggest.

Commander Hoth:  Well, some Commander's like XI7 Turbolasers due to their power to limit redirected shots.

Commander Endor: Yea, I love XI7's! Something else is enhancing the standard Armaments of good ole space whale. It will let her joust with higher levels of damage at long range.

Yavin: Well before we end, do you have any last comments?

Commander Hoth: Yes I do. This is a strategy to protect the Nebulon-B. You can use the Assault Frigate to guard the flank. This will protect the weaker sides of the Nebulon-B.

Commander Endor: Well,  we covered squadron tactics pretty well last interview, but to recap them. Use them as a deterrent, if a few strong bomber squadrons can keep the Gladiator out of wanting to hit your flank all the better. You can also use slower squadrons like the B-Wing and leave them in the course of where a Gladiator will go.

Yavin: Well that is all the time we have for today. Tune in next time.

Surviving the Imperial Tactics: Gladiator Star Destroyer

Greetings freedom seekers, this is reporter Yavin with another interview from Alliance commanders, that's right, plural we have a few commanders today assisting us with some important questions.

Today we look at one of the Imperial Navy's ships that have been seeing an exceptional amount of deployment, the Gladiator Star Destroyer.

Yavin: So let's get this interview started.  Since we are keeping your identities secret we can skip the introductions. Could you tell us about about this threat?

Commander A: Having seen one personally,  I an say that while they are big their speed can surprise you.

Commander B: Ain't that the truth,  most of those monsters have great engine crews and they know just how to coax every ounce of power to that area.

Yavin: So you are saying that it can suddenly just speed up out of no where?

Commander A: Well it can feel like that. The most well known ship to do this is the Demolisher.  Her captain seems to take a perverse pleasure in shooting in what a pilot would call a flyby.

Commander B: That Demolisher is can cause a bunch of Chaos,  it gets worse when they have Assault Concussion Missiles on board.  It makes quick work of a Nebulon-B's sides.

Yavin: I would think that the Nebulon-B ships would fear these ships then right?

Commander A: Well,  yes they do.  If they are not supported they can be dismembered quickly.

Commander B: Same goes for our Corellian Blockade Runners.  While fast the Gladiator has been known to cut sharp turns and be in range.  You kinda want the initiative on these buggers.

Yavin: So how would a someone combat a Gladiator Star Destroyer then?

Commander A: Well a favored tactic is to just keep at long range and wear it down. . .
Commander B: That ain't always going to work though.  The next option that I have seen is to use a bigger ship like good ole Space Whale to absorb their alpha strike and while they are in close range strike with all batteries!

Yavin: Space Whale?  Is that an nickname for a ship?

Commander A: [shakes head ruefully]  Yes,  it is an affectionate term used to describe the Assault Frigate Mkii.  She is a bulky ship but can hold her own against the Impires Victory Star Destroyers.

Commander B: Yea,  good ole space whale takes a pounding but she is a tough old ship.  She can usually take one or two close range shots from a Gladiator and continue to fight.

Yavin: So we have keeping your distance and using larger ships to "tank" the damage? What about fighters like the X-Wing and bombers like the Y-Wing?

Commander A: Ahhh now this is a good turn!  The X-Wing has some good capabilities to hurt the Gladiator but I don't think it does more then strip shields.  While those squadrons are great dog fighters I only like seeing them take on a ship if they have no more pressing business to take care of.

Commander B: I can agree with that. I think the B-Wing is a much better choice,  Those amazing creations from good ole Admiral Akbar are amazing deterrents to a flanking Gladiator.

Yavin: B-Wings?  Are they not to slow to catch such ships?

Commander A: [laughs] Outright, yes. That is where a good Fleet Commander plans for a few situations.

Commander B: I see where you are going with this. The B-Wing squadrons can hold a flank from the on rushing Gladiator like I said or the smart Fleet Commander's will place their B-Wings into the path of the Gladiator.  Two to three squadrons of B-Wings can cripple a Gladiator more often than naught I say.

Yavin: Alright that is all the time we have for today,  any closing remarks?

Commander A: Watch where those Gladiators are coming from.  If they have bomber support don't panic,  take things one at a time.

Commander B: I second that, Them pesky Gladiators can be tricky.  They like to start off slow but they can get into the thick of things Fast.

Yavin: Alright,  this broadcast has been brought to you by the Alliance and their fearless team of code slicers!

Running the Blockade at Yavin

. . .The fashion statement is seen as a rejection of t. . .

We at AFN interrupt this meaningless broadcast from HNN. Our data pad readers can view the article via the link at the end of this broadcast.

We are happy to report that the Alliance has thwarted the Empire once again. Leader Mon Motha was able to recently make her escape from around the Yavin blockade. She led her fleet out of the system, encountering a Victory Star Destroyer and a Gladiator Star Destroyer.

We are sad to report that two of the four CR90's in Mon Motha's feet were lost and many of the Alliance sailors were captured or killed. Our hearts go out to their friends and families.

The encounter did damage both of the Imperial ships, so they will be in need of repairs.

The game started with my GSD in the bottom right corner of the Ambush deployment and my VSD straight forward at the middle of the board. The plan there was to have the GSD strike into one of the ships and the others trailing the GSD could possibly run into the VSD.

My opponent service her CR90's sort of apart. Her flagship was at one far corner of the deployment, and the other 3 were right next to each other. CR90 A was behind the two CR90 B's that were sitting side by side. (she actually stacked a shield dial of one on top of the base of the other)

During round 1 I activate my GSD which bumps up to speed 3 and Engine techs forward. She moves her CR90's toward my GSD to try and overwhelm it. The VSD moves forward speed 1 and the TIE/A's durdle around.

Round 2 after GSD moves again, she rams its rear with the engine tech CR90 (at this point I with we wee playing precision strike a little)  and the others come close. Her Flagship is at speed 4 from my GSD and I hope to punish it next turn.  My VSD comes up as speed 1 not wanting to turn too early.

Round 3, instead of hitting a CR90 with the VSD first I use the GSD to try and hit Mon Motha in her CR90 A. I shoot at the B that rimmed me last turn dealing a little damage, Mon Motha's super evades are hindering me greatly (and do so throughout the game). My GSD then rushes toward Mon Motha and rolls around. Black dice to her side hull. I do get to activate ACMs and deal 1 damage to her front since she redirected it all there. Mon Motha was left without shields on her front and starboard. More CR90 movement and my VSD comes up as speed 2 and angels towards where the rest of the CR90's should be next turn. One of the CR90 B's does get into close range of the VSD's front arc and starboard arc. . . Mon Motha is right behind an aestroid at the end of the turn

Round 4, I had a choice, either shoot at nothing with the GSD or roll 6 dice at a CR90. . . So my VSD went first so that CR90 could not escape me. The CR90 B did die horribly in that one shot. It was bad. . .  The second CR90 B then unleashes 3 blue dice into my GSD's rear but gets no crits. I end up with no damage there. It then zooms in front of my ship on the port side, this leaves my GSD to be the tail now. Which it ends up killing that CR90 B as well.

Turns 5 and 6 were really uneventful, the CR90's stay away only getting shot at occasionally and the TIEs did get a couple shots off but nothing amazing.

Game ended with 99 points in my favor.

Ships in the Alliance Fleet: CR90 the Corellian Corvette

. . .seeing increased use on the front lines. . .

Greetings from AFN, let us thank HNN for having such easily sliced HoloNet access.

This is reporter Yavin with a new style of article. Today we are talking to an Alliance Corellian Corvette commander and his experience in the use of these fast and versatile capital ships. Due to the need of anonymity we will not divulge the commanders name.

Now on to the question and answer portion of the interview!

Yavin: Tell about the CR90,  what makes it a ship that the Alliance likes to use so much?

Commander: Well, the CR90 has many different functions, from blockade running, ambassadorial use, carrier operations, and scouting operations are only a few of its rolled. This versatility is vital to the Alliance's day to day needs.

Yavin: You just brought up its speed. Compared to larger ships, why is this such a good thing?

Commander: Many Admirals in the Imperial Navy think that firepower is what decides a battle. With the CR90, it is all about its speed. The capacity to come in wide at the edge of Heavy Turbolaser range and suddenly shift around and hit close at the weaker rear shields and hull are not only strategically sound they impact on a psychological level as well.

Yavin: What about its fire power? How does it compare to, let's say a Nebulon-B?

Commander: The CR90 is not a slugging ship. The majority of its fire power is located in its fore arc. This includes Turbolasers and Ion Cannons which make this a capable ship if underestimated. It's side arcs are just slightly weaker but can still deal some rather punishing blows.

Yavin: Tell us about the variants of the CR90 that the Alliance currently uses.

Commander: Currently, the Alliance has focused on two variants of the CR90. We have the CR90 A, which uses turbo lasers and the CR90 B, which uses primarily Ion Cannons. Each can be further upgraded with an assortment or armaments and defensive systems.

Yavin: Tell us a bit about some of these upgrades that are popular with the Alliance commanders.

Commander: Well some like to had Enhanced Armaments to the side arcs which allows for as much firepower from them as the fore arc. Others enjoy modified turbolasers like the XI7's which make shifting damage difficult for other vessels. With the CR90 B, commanders enjoy more of a tactic of leading their shots in order to maximize damage when they can. There are also teams in the engineering areas that assist in coaxing out extra speed from the CR90.

Yavin: What about crew compliment? What is the favored group?

Commander: Well, Raymus Antilles has been known to assist with CR90 operations. There is another well known figure but I would rather not say that person's name, that person does a great job of coordinating ships however, Raymus makes the crews work more effective. There have been times when Intelligence Officers have assisted in combat, finding weaknesses in the enemy that may have been missed otherwise.

Yavin: Before we get onto the topic of command, what defensive upgrades are used?

Commander: We employ various Electronic Countermeasures to counter the accuracy of the whips we face, there is also the Advanced Projector fields that we use in order to shift more damage around, those ECM is by far the favorite that we see used.

Yavin: All right, command. With a ship this size it must be fairly easy to have orders relayed right?

Commander: You are absolutely correct. Compared to the Nebulon-B and the Assault Frigate Mark II with their large crews, the CR90 and it's crew respond quick which makes it a very tactically capable ship.

Yavin: Speaking of tactics, could you tell us a little bit about what is commonly used?

Commander: For operational security purposes I can only go into minor details. Some fleet commanders enjoy employing mass CR90 fleets, upwards of 6 or so at a time. They have been known to use these are makeshift rams, taking out larger ships at the cost of needing time in a repair yard. Others use the CR90 to flank slower capital ships using its speed to get into range while a more "dangerous" target occupies the enemy. Others like to use the CR90 B to land highly accurate shots to disable enemy ships.

Yavin: Tell us about some of the more well known CR90's.

Commander: Well there is Dodonna's Pride which is usually configured as a CR90 B, it has a well earned reputation of crippling other ships. There is Tantive IV, which is a great command ship, and lastly there is Jaina's Light which is known for its accurate flying and shooting in aestroid and debris fields.

Yavin: Well that is all the time we have for our show today, thank you commander and May the Force be with you.

Commander: Thank you for having me here today.
